JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education: High School graduate or equivalent. A two-year degree from an accredited trade school is
required with the approved courses from a fiber optic technology program.


Certification or Licensure: ETA Fiber Optic Installer (FOI) certification is required. Must possess a
valid state driver’s license.


Skills: Must be able to troubleshoot electrical controls and repair them. Ability to read blueprints and
schematics. Leadership ability to direct a skilled worker or helper. Knowledge of different electrical and
fiber optic testing equipment and tools and know how to use them. Extensive understanding of fiber optic
systems and how they work. Must understand how to interpret the results of the test equipment.


Work Experience: Minimum six years of on-the-job experience with specialized equipment such as
fusion splicers, and OTDR test equipment and have knowledge of their operation.

 

PRIMARY DUTY: 

This position is responsible for maintaining all electrical devices; some new construction; and the
installation of new equipment. Prepare, maintain, and install fiber optic networks.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Respond to maintenance requests and report status to the electrical foreman.
2. Troubleshoot electrical problems at all levels.
3. Make repairs as required to the NEC (National Electric Code).
4. Repair and maintain equipment.
5. Install and troubleshoot multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
6. Splice, connect, and test optical fiber networks.
7. Set up fiber optic cables between computer, phone, and fax lines; Telco, broadband, and local area
network applications.
8. Install cabling systems that include Cat 5 and fiber optic.
9. The employee shall carry out such other and further duties, whether specifically listed above or not,
as are assigned or required by such employee’s supervisor, other appropriate school personnel, law
board policy administrative regulation, department handbook, as are reasonably necessary to the
efficient operation of the school system and its mission.
